The celebrated filmmaker Imtiaz Ali is currently engaged in promoting his upcoming biographical drama film “Amar Singh Chamkila,” starring Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra in the lead roles.
Scheduled to debut on the OTT platform Netflix on April 12, the movie recounts the true story of the “Elvis Presley of Punjab,” Amar Singh Chamkila (portrayed by Diljit), who gained fame in the 1980s for his musical prowess. Tragically, he and his wife Amarjot Kaur (played by Parineeti) were fatally shot by an unidentified gang of motorcyclists at the age of 27.
Recently, the creators of “Amar Singh Chamkila” revealed the film’s official trailer, which received positive feedback from fans. During an interview with Lallantop at the trailer launch, Imtiaz disclosed how he wanted Parineeti to gain weight for her role in the film.
The director of “Love Aaj Kal” remarked, “She was the top choice. When I met her, she expressed, ‘I have been waiting for years to do a film where I could sing.’ I told her, ‘This is such a film,’ and she agreed. Then we realized she also bears a resemblance to Amarjot. So, I suggested, ‘It’s simple, start indulging in samosas, cream, and chaat,’ you have to gain 10 kilograms.”
After completing “Chamkila,” Parineeti shared a video on her Instagram account, showcasing her efforts to shed the extra weight she had gained for the role.
In the caption, she wrote, “I spent six months last year singing in Rahman sir’s studio, and returning home to consume as much junk food as possible to gain 15 kilograms for ‘Chamkila!'”
She continued, “Music and food. That was my routine. Now that the film is completed, the story is the reverse. I miss the studio, and I’m working hard in the gym to resemble myself again, and not like Amarjot ji! It’s been tough. But anything for you, Imtiaz sir! And this role.”
The film marks the first on-screen collaboration of Parineeti and Diljit with director Imtiaz Ali. While Diljit recently appeared in the film “Crew” alongside Kareena, Kriti, and Tabu, Parineeti has yet to announce her next project.
