On his popular and often controversial talk show Koffee with Karan, host Karan Johar has frequently mentioned his closely guarded WhatsApp groups with Bollywood celebrities.

One such group, called GUTS, features Johar and his friends—including Kareena Kapoor, Karisma Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor, and Rhea Kapoor—critiquing celebrity airport looks and red carpet styles.

At a recent London event, when asked if he’d consider writing a book based on those chats, Johar replied with a laugh, “If those WhatsApp conversations ever became public, many of us would have to relocate to London—we couldn’t stay in Mumbai!”

In a conversation with Mojo Story, Johar elaborated that these chats are brutally honest, at times harsh, and filled with unfiltered opinions about everything from fashion to films. “We’re fashion critics, film critics, and critics of just about everything. We all have strong opinions, but there’s no way we could share them publicly,” he admitted.

Johar also spoke about being in more serious WhatsApp groups, especially as a single father to his twins, Yash and Roohi. He said being part of two parent groups—one for each of his children’s classes—can be overwhelming but also funny. “Imagine waking up to 62 moms every morning starting the conversation with ‘Ladies!’ And I’m like, ‘Hello? I’m here too!’” he joked. Despite the chaos, he’s found these mothers to be incredibly supportive, especially when navigating the challenges of parenting alone. Johar became a father in 2017 through surrogacy.

Apart from his film career, Johar is also a published author. His memoir An Unsuitable Boy, co-written with journalist Poonam Saxena, was released by Penguin Random House in 2016. Professionally, he’s set to direct his first Netflix India series, following the success of his 2023 film Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, which starred Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt.
