A contingent of Islamists targeted Bollywood actress Soha Ali Khan on her Instagram profile, criticizing her participation in the Hindu festival of Holi.
Soha had shared a reel on her Instagram, showing her, along with her husband Kunal Khemu and daughter Inaaya Naumi Khemu, playing with water and colors during Holi. She captioned the post, “Colour me happy because…holi hai!!!” At the time of writing, the reel had garnered over 3.8 lakh likes.
Some Islamists berated Soha for celebrating Holi during the month of Ramazan, while others condemned her for marrying a non-Muslim and allegedly straying from Islamic teachings.
One individual, Mohammed Umar, sarcastically remarked, “You must not have fasted today…Great.” Another commenter, Riya, launched into a tirade, criticizing Soha’s father for marrying a nonbeliever and implying that his actions had led his children away from Islam.
Accusations of polytheism were also leveled against Soha and her child, with one commenter, Hyder, warning that they would face consequences from Allah and their ancestors on Judgment Day.
Additionally, questions were raised about how a Muslim could marry a Hindu in contemporary India, with some users derogatorily referring to them as “haram ki aulad” (illegitimate children).
Furthermore, a group of Islamists condemned both Soha and Muslims in India for celebrating Holi during Ramzan, while others questioned why members of Saif Ali Khan’s family, who also participated in Holi, retained Muslim names.
This incident reflects a recurring pattern where Muslim actors or actresses face abuse from radical members of their community for partaking in Hindu festivals. Similar instances have been reported previously, such as Shah Rukh Khan being criticized for visiting a Shirdi Sai temple and observing Ganesh Chathurthi.
