Even though Elon Musk is the wealthiest person in the world, he leads a surprisingly low-key lifestyle. He minimizes his time sleeping, eating, and engaging in leisure activities.
While it’s well-known that Musk has a strong interest in technology and space, details about his minimalist approach to personal life are less publicized, including how he accommodates his family during their visits.
Elon’s mother, Maye Musk, who is a supermodel and dietitian, recently shared in an interview with The Times UK that her son’s substantial wealth doesn’t translate to extravagant guest accommodations. She mentioned, “I have to sleep in the garage” when visiting Elon’s SpaceX facility in Texas, and added, “You can’t have a fancy house near a rocket site.”
Maye also reminisced about a time when she and her family lived in a one-bedroom apartment for a year. In a 2023 post on X, she described how she often ends up sleeping on mattresses, blankets on the floor, couches, or even in the garage when staying with Elon. She noted that her other children, Tosca and Kimball, have had similar experiences, often sleeping on the floor as well.
She remarked, “We adapt. It’s still better than sleeping on the ground in the Kalahari Desert with lions or hyenas nearby, which I did as a child.”
Maye also expressed her disinterest in Mars missions, stating that the lengthy preparation and isolation required do not appeal to her. However, she mentioned that she would be willing to participate if her children desired it.
In a 2022 TED talk, Elon Musk disclosed that he does not own a home and is currently staying with friends. Reflecting this, he sold his five large properties and moved into a modest, two-bedroom modular home near SpaceX’s Texas location, valued at about $50,000. Despite this, there are rumors that he has recently bought a larger family residence.
