Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant’s wedding has drawn widespread attention for its extravagant display of wealth and cultural heritage.
A notable feature of the event was Anant Ambani’s unique jewelry selection—a historic Mughal turban ornament known as a sarpech, which was transformed into an elegant armlet or bajuband.
Originally owned by Nita Ambani and auctioned for INR 4.14 crore in 2019 as part of Christie’s Maharajas collection, the sarpech is adorned with intricate designs featuring antique spinel, ruby, and diamonds. This exquisite piece, once worn by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan, was repurposed for the wedding, adding a majestic touch to the groom’s attire.
The ornament, featuring spinel beads, circular ruby cabochons, and an array of diamonds, bears historical engravings referencing Shah Jahan, underscoring its rich heritage.
Nita Ambani had previously adorned the sarpech at the 71st Miss World pageant in Mumbai, pairing it elegantly with a black Banarasi sari. Its transformation from a traditional turban ornament into a contemporary bajuband exemplifies a creative blend of Mughal history and modern fashion, showcasing the fusion of Indian and European craftsmanship.
The wedding not only highlighted luxury and grandeur but also celebrated the incorporation of historical artifacts into modern festivities. The choice of jewelry, particularly the repurposed Mughal sarpech, has garnered significant admiration for its historical and artistic significance, cementing the wedding’s status as a landmark event in cultural and fashion spheres.
