Amitabh Bachchan’s sharp wit and dry sense of humour have made him one of the most beloved hosts on Indian television game shows.
During a special episode featuring Bollywood stars Anushka Sharma and Varun Dhawan, the Piku actor shared his dislike for certain vegetables, humorously describing them as unfit to eat.
“Jackfruit, bitter gourd, and pumpkin – just hearing their names makes them sound inedible,” he joked. Anushka Sharma responded light-heartedly, saying, “I like all of them,” and mentioned that her mother’s jackfruit curry is one of her favourites.
To this, Bachchan quipped, “I don’t know how you… in fact, someone else should be asked how they tolerate you.”
Despite the jokes, vegetables like jackfruit, pumpkin, and bitter gourd are packed with nutrients and make excellent additions to a healthy diet. Dietician and certified diabetes educator Kanikka Malhotra outlined their benefits:
Jackfruit (Kathal)
Jackfruit is rich in potassium, which is essential for muscle function, including the heart, and helps regulate sodium levels to prevent arterial damage. It’s beneficial for those with arthritis or osteoporosis due to its calcium content, which supports bone health. Its potassium content also minimizes calcium loss through the kidneys. Additionally, jackfruit is a good source of iron, supporting metabolism and combating anemia, while vitamin C, magnesium, and copper improve blood quality.
Pumpkin (Kaddu)
Low in calories but high in essential nutrients, one cup of cooked pumpkin has just about 49 calories. It provides ample vitamins A and C, potassium, fibre, and antioxidants. The beta-carotene in pumpkin converts into vitamin A, supporting immunity, eye health, and skin vitality. Vitamin C promotes collagen production, and potassium helps maintain healthy blood pressure. Its fibre aids digestion, helps manage weight, and stabilizes blood sugar levels.
Bitter Gourd (Karela)
Derived from the bitter melon plant, karela is packed with nutrients like vitamins A and C, folate, potassium, and iron. Health benefits include:
* Lowering blood sugar levels, useful for managing diabetes
* High fibre content for improved digestion and constipation relief
* Boosted immunity from vitamin C
* Antioxidants that support skin health by reducing free radicals and promoting collagen
* Low calorie, high-fibre composition for better satiety and weight control
* Support for liver function and detoxification
Malhotra advised that while karela can be especially helpful for people with conditions like diabetes or kidney issues, it’s important to be cautious. Because it can significantly lower blood sugar, those on diabetes medication should consult a doctor before incorporating karela into their diet to avoid the risk of hypoglycemia.
